Heart rate is a funny old thing. I know of two places where my HR monitor will go crazy and shoot up over 200 bpm. It happened to a Polar & Garmin HR monitors. Its obviously some form of electrical interference. But as to individual HR's, even though I'm 51, my HR can still go over 190 bpm, when I'm fully fit and charging up a hill at full pelt. When climbing in the mountains it'll regularly top 170 - 180 bpm. Its all down to my genetics I guess

I'm a couple of years younger than you and hit the wall at anything much over 180-185 for short bursts. Okay at 175-180 when climbing for a fair while, better below 170 which is what I aim for. You must be fitter than me! |

Re: The Cycling Thread
Not at the moment
I wore my HR strap in the Pyrenees where my avg on the Tourmalet was 159bpm, and I was able to adjust my pace by watching my HR. So it was useful to avoid blowing up. But I didn't wear it in the Alps last year, I just rode on how I felt and I didn't have any problems either. It would have been interesting to see what my HR was on the start ramps of Alpe d'Huez and at the top, as these were to two places I was at max HR for sure

Re: The Cycling Thread
Finally found my way to this thread
Im on my second week into this here thing you call "cycling" feeling like a full on roadie now as I pass a flat barred bike and mentally thumb my nose to their inferior equipment lol. So today's the first day I've felt the benifit, a hill I've been intimidated by before starting riding and then despising whilst I rode it was today tackled with reasonable comfort. A new PB for it on Strava which I'm loving for so many reasons the main one been it gives you a pat on the back for putting some extra effort in. I've also already got a 6th place of 120 on a small section as I head into work... Room for improvement |

Re: The Cycling Thread
I know, I suddenly remembered, old age I guess
Yes, Mavic Ksyrium Elites would be nicer climbing wheels, noisy freehubs when freewheeling mind, my Askium training wheels are.
