http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/blog/20...-live#block-44 I'm not in any way condoning the rioting or any other form of violent protest - I think the local population involved in doing so are just using the shooting as an excuse to damage property, hurt people and steal. |

I think that if that's what they really think of the area where they live, fine let em live like that. Burned out bus = no buses. Burned out police cars = riot police. Bricks thrown at police officers = liberal use of CS. Looted shops = no traders. Smashed up jobcentre = no benefit payments. Don't fix up the shops, just leave em exactly as they are so that they remember why they have no shops. Leave the burned out bus as a reminder for why they have no public transport. Disgusting behaviour. Attacking police officers like that deserves a very firm response. Not in accordance with my normally liberal views ![]() |

MBK, I can see that the resulting violence and the obvious intent to cause damage now has nothing to do with yesterday’s initial cause, other than it was the spark in that particular tinderbox.
The news reports however when speaking to the family showed that no-one had been to them to discuss what had happened to their son prior to this afternoon. Now I understand that an investigation may take time, but talking to the family surely is the normal procedural step when there has been a loss in this way? There is an obvious parallel to the behavior we see during times of recession compared to times when the economy is doing well. Saying so really doesn’t change it either way. It’s a fact. Sadly this particular area has been the target for a long time of police clear up, and so when they say they have been a targeted area, they aren’t wrong. Sadly it’s because they exhibit behavior as displayed yesterday and today that they are. |

Anna, the point I was trying to make is that we are at the moment speculating that the Police haven't spoken properly to the family. We currently only have one side of the story so I don't think we can reliably go on what the media are spouting.
With regards to the rest of it then yeah, it probably is just a group of thugs who want to hurt people, burn down buildings and steal. Probably not even interested in the guy that was shot! |

i watched it on the news and was absolutely disgusted.
when you look at the number of police vehicles and police officers that were in attendance the first thing i thought was how would they have coped with all the proposed cuts to the police force. As usual the taxpayer is going to have to pay towards the clean up. The scum trashing everywhere are probably all on the dole anyway. once they identify those involved they should stop all their beneifts and the foreign ones kick out the country IMO

I love the way his family state that he was involved in things BUT not a violent man. Sorry no such thing having lived round the corner from the burnt outs. The underworld down there is a scary scary place if you are on the wrong side.
I don't know what happened I wasn't there and therefore I can't really comment on it but its seem a minority have taken the cause too far, as usual. The police will be dammned not matter what and as usual it the tax payers that have to clear it up and as much I want to agree with Ed why let a minority ruin it for the majoirity decent souls that are there. And who's going to pay back the shop owners their liveliehood? As for the looting - ach let them JJB Sports - they got insurance besides you know the excuses that will be used when they go to pick them up It'll be more hassle that its worth. |

I think the police themselves said it best, Damned if we do, damned if we don't.
When they activly restrict protesters they get screamed at for being heavy handed, kettling, Uman rights etc etc. When they don't this happens and they get blamed for not being heavy handed enough *Sigh*. I think the poster above had it right, don't spend a penny fixing the damage, let them live with it and have no one to blame but themselves. While I know we don't have all the facts yet when papers like the Metro go on and on about how the police let it get out of hand, that the riots are due to a man being shot by police, but don't mention ONCE that an officer was also shot...you have to wonder what the hell they are trying to achieve. |

and the poor families who are now homeless? what do we do about them. the building will be condemed and dropped. why should a majority have to put up with a minorities behaviour. Use it as a lever to get names for those that looted out of the community

Aye was more a satisfying vent than a real idea.
looking at the photos there is one guy in tears over the remains of his car and I can only imagine how i'd feel if I woke up one morning to find my bike burnt to a crisp by these ******** According to METs twitter feed over 50 arrests already, not that I hold much faith of any of them facing any real punishment but it's a start ![]() Best form of punishment for those caught? dock their benefits to pay for the damage and the cost of the police over time etc. Last edited by PsychoCannon; 08-08-11 at 10:20 AM. |

Why do the the police not have water cannon for these types of events.
Even a couple of redundant fire engines and police officer trained how to attach the hose to the hydrant and point/squirt would have soon put it down. (Not fire brigade for this type of work) Thugs and hooligans. I have no sympathy for any. Where were the baton rounds?
