Yes a heavier bike is definitely IMO easier to control at low speed. My friend's FJR1300 is a real pussy cat at walking pace, far easier than the SV which is slightly flighty as it's so light. Centre of gravity of course plays another part in the equation.

Like Paul Cooper I have just joined an Advanced Motorcycle group and went on my first official ride with them on Sunday. One of the riders was doing really tight turns in the car park of the cafe we stopped at and he didn't have much room. He was on a big BMW Boxer and it was very noticable that he was putting his weight well over to the left whilst doing a R/H U turn. Like Paul I realised I had some practicing to do. My U turns mostly come off but sometimes a dismal failure which I don't like at all.

I hope you are right as I had my doubts at first. After my wet run with them on Sunday I felt really good to be with riders of a known quantity. Mind you I did drop it doing a tight slow turn after being guided down the wrong turning, somehow I hit the kill switch just as my bars were as close to the tank as they could get and gently fell to the floor in front of 5 or 6 advanced riders I had just met for the first time. It was embarrasing.

I've found it depends so much on the bike. Some bikes are animals for low speed handling, others make it all so easy.

I've got a small Rickman Micro Metisse with a Triumph Tiger Cub 200cc engine fitted. That you can bring to a standstill, hop it round by bouncing the suspension trials-style, and ride off in the opposite direction, no problem. The SVS I don't find so easy!

i can do circles and u turns on my g/f's curvy

but i am a show off when it comes to slow speed control

if you really wanna get serious, try loading the bike up with luggage, taking a pillion and do a full lock u turn from standing start

Im sure that if you think, Oh, U Turn, you will fall off

don't think about it and just spin it round in the road and it is a portion of urine :P

Exactly.

That cop video above is wierd. They seem to love testing these really tight slow turns. Thats all the bike driving test is here: lots of turning on full lock, and one slowing down thing.
Thats it.

I have seen some of the cops here do scary things on those bikes. Its a joke... they are up against squids on R1s... driving those monsters.

EDIT: I was just talking to a cop friend, apparantly they almost never use bikes in pursuit. or at least "its very much frowned upon", whatever that means. I still think they should just give them 1150GS's

I've been playing on my TRX which is pretty much as bad or worse than an SV I'd have thought. As with any bike pretty much, the trick is to force yourself to get on the power if it starts to fall; can hold it on full lock if you do this.
