performance for me is not about going fast, it's about rider satisfaction

it's more to do with torque and power delivery than outright power, but large capacity bikes deliver it, and particularly the triple engine you have now

its why i posted a link earlier to a CBF1000, not a 650 versys

a bike that makes things feel totally effortless is rewarding to ride, even if you don't ride it fast

unless you want something younger with less miles, stick to what you have, that 955 engine is a peach

He did say he wanted something newer.

The days of tear arsing the lanes have gone and I want comfort, economy, able to cruise at legal speed limits effortlessly, capability to carry a bit of camping gear all within a budget of £4500 [trade in /sale plus £3000]

Deauville but it would be second hand or a new CB500F spring to mind the CB is naked and basic model but new with 2 year warranty.

My current bike, Triumph Sprint 955i complete with luggage has been meticulously looked after and I have no qualms about going or doing anything with it as it ticks all my boxes. 50mpg and motorway speeds at less than half throttle or riding all day for 500 miles ache free with good weather protection

Do I take the plunge and would, what I consider a downsize/grade be a bit drastic--------OR-------do I keep what I have and spend my £3000 keeping it in top condition and ride it or go for a smaller replacement but newer. I may gain a bit on mpg and possibly insurance but just wonder if going smaller is the answer.

Just a muse on a boring day but what would you do?
well that decision is yours, but the old triumph with its poor build quality will soon be falling to bits, whereas if you got the dullvil you would only have half the hp so a bit slower (125mph)but you get shaft drive built in panniers fully faired, and very reliable with honda build quality, and from what a mate who owns one has told me makes a very good long distance tourer, and should do better mpg then the triumph, but the best way to find out if it is what you are after is to take one for a long test ride,as to the cbf500 as a naked commuter it might make sense, but not quite as good as a tourer, although it is a lighter bike

What about the new Diversion XJ6F? They're supposed to be pretty nice middleweight sport-tourers. Not sure if they're in your price range, but wait a couple of years and used prices will come down.

I haven't ridden one, so can't comment on the comfort.

Tiger 1050? Though they're fairly tall top-heavy bikes. You can fit a lower seat, or get the bike lowered if necessary. I'm 5'10 and only just find it manageable. They're comfy, do-it-all bikes though.
some people love the dullvil, some hate them, the diversion may be a better sportier bike, but is only 14kgs lighter but has a extra 14hp,but does about 10mpg less then the dullvil, but both have the same claimed top speed, although the diversion will nodoubt get to it quicker

Sounds like you need that same big v-twin satisfaction still but with something a little newer?

Could you justify a little more cash and get an SMT / Adventure? Either would provide a good long term bike that does nearly everything you'll want..just not everyone's cup of tea...?
