It seems that i am becoming a bit of a resource for this wonderful site the answer you require is; ![]() Motorcycles must have an approved DVLA yellow reflective backing with black legal characters measuring exactly 64 x 44mm, spaced 10mm apart with 30mm between letter groups. The margins between the edge of the plate and the nearest part of the letter must be a minimum of 11mm. The registration must be displayed on 2 lines and split in the conventional way. I believe the plate must have a BSAU mark (shatterproof qualities) If you tamper with the letter groups you commit an offence. If you sit down and do the sums, from the figures above it works out as 7” x 9” for the plate size. These regulations are from DVLA; Road vehicles (Display of registration marks) Regs 2001 I hope this helps you and everyone else that are unsure about the legalities. ![]() Regards Fraser This incorperates previous legislation and is for m/cycles first registered on or after 01/01/1973 (with slight variations of course, but basically the same) |

Most bikes that i see around the city all seem to have correctly sized plates...well the city is infested with GPZ500....
Is this a common thing....changing the size of the plate or do peeps only do it if they put new mods on such as undertrays? i would be intrigued to know... regards Fraser |

Here's one for you then fraser01. One of my mates was asked are the fold up from a lever number plates legal (you know the ones for cameras).
He did not know so asked around at the police station they did no know either. The only one who had any sort of answer was a traffic plod who said "it should be ok on the bike if the plate was within regs as I can't think of any laws against it. However if it was used in the folded up position it would be illegal especially to conseal identity whilst commiting an offence. Is there any change as the obvious purpose it to be used in an illegal manner at the appropriate time. Also what would your reactions be to discovering such a device. PS I haven't got one on my bike. |
