The last owner stripped the thread on the sump! The heli-coil gave up the ghost today when I tried to tighten the plug up and fell out. So it looks like I've got to tap an M18 thread in and use a H*nda sump plug

Not original but effective lasting repair,by the way did you use a new compression washer?

Good morning all. That would be an M14 thread old boy. Not an ideal situation by any means. Have some cheapo oil to hand to use as a wash through. This should help remove some of the chips that will doubtless find their way in, despite gravity. Cheers. |

Mac - yes I did.
I measured the washer and it had an internal diameter of just over 16mm. I was thinking of just getting a new heli-coil put in, but i think that it has stripped the ally out when it fell out. Any thoughts? |

Good morning all.
I doubt that a new helicoil will stay in place if it's stripped it's retaining thread. It sounds like it's already fairly oversize if the washer measures 16mm providing it's a good fit on the old plug threads. You may find there's not much metal left on the sump to get another oversize in. ![]() A couple of years ago I had a bike with a similar problem. Having a Lathe I made a plug with a fine M16 thread on the outside & an M10 thread on the inisde. I loctited the plug into the engine using Kryptonite strength loctite. Then the oil could be drained using the internal 10mm threaded hole, with a standard M10 flanged bolt & Alumunium washer as a drain plug. Cheers. Last edited by Spanner Man; 08-04-10 at 11:08 AM. |

Anyone ever thought of putting a 1/4-turn ball valve on there, and never worry about the threads again?

Might cause some ground clearance issues... and lockwiring it shut would be a very good idea!
