Default Bike Training day at work :)

I am fortunate to be attending over the next 2 days at work a bike course.

I believe it starts tomorrow with ProScot (i think) coming to do some trial lessons for people interested in biking.

In the afternoon Fife Constabulary are having a talk about Bikesafe and riding techniques then on Thursday they are organising a ride out with assessment.

I need to polish up my skills so as it is free i will be taking part,

has anyone else done a Bikesafe course and if so what did you take away from it that has improved your riding if anything?

Jammy git

I did Bikesafe about 9 years ago IIRC. Key things I learned at the time was road positioning, better use of brakes, throttle and gears and better obs.

It made my riding a lot smoother, less jamming on the brakes just before going into a corner, or running into a corner a bit too quick and then grabbing the brakes.

Really enjoyed the day I did - I was encouraged to ride far quicker than seems natural knowing you are being followed by a copper

Well worth doing the bikesafe, done it twice with the Fife guys, really did improve my riding no end, ob skills, road positioning and right speed for what I was doing.

Get what Matt means about going faster than natural when being followed by a full blown police bike, second time they were on loaner bikes

When I did it I had twin renegade hi-level carbon race cans on my SV650 - only comment from the police was 'bloody hell, they sound nice'

I certainly did.

That was a thoroughly enjoyable couple of days.

on Wednesday the very nice people at ProScot came along with some of their bikes (125's and 650's). They gave people that had never ridden a bike before a chance to "have a go" on the 125's and an area was set up on the airfield for them to get basic lessons on bike control.

Another area was set up for people that could ride but didn't have a licence so they got to have a go on the 125's as well.

Another area was set up to represent the test area for the new updated test. There was 7 of us on the day that had licences but had never passed doing the new test so we were put through that and it was good fun. I was only picked up on one thing and that was that i probably wasn't up to the correct speed for the emergency stop and swerve. There was no speed recording device so our actual speeds were not recorded.

In the afternoon we had Fife Constabulary Traffic Officers give us a talk and explained about BikeSafe riding techniques.

Today we were split into groups (morning and afternoon). there were 2 police bikes so 2 of us went with each police officer. I started off first in our group and went a few miles then we stopped to discuss my riding position and use of the road. The other bloke in our group took the next section of the road then the copper led for a bit for us to see how he uses the road. This went on for a while swapping over regularly.
Unfortunately during one of my leads my bike which had been playing up for the last 2 days decided to completely die on my. Thankfully i had some tools with me and was able to fix the problem Felt really silly when i realised what the problem was but was very proud of myself for getting the bike running again!

I have learnt a lot from doing this course and hopefully it will make me a better rider on roads that i do not know! Time will tell and as long as i put what i learnt into practice then i shouldn't slow everyone down when out on ride outs.
