any vehicle is only reliable as to how its looked after. if you neglect it it will break.
build quality is a different thing and i would say that BMW, Honda and Yamaha are the 3 main ones. but all bikes regardless of manufacturer all suffer from one main weakness and that is the bolts as they all use low grade cheep as they can get their hands on stuff which is why company's such as pro-bolt make a fortune. |

My experience with Honda is that it is really easy to fix something, it runs no matter what and selling my CG125 BRJ was the biggest mistake I ever made! The CBF600 sat in the garage at the moment seems very plastic and unpleasant though.
The only Yamaha bikes we have had are both second hand. The XJ400 is now a Xj550 due to the engine letting go and mangling the bottom end and seizing the engine. The DT50 we got for my Step Son has so far developed a fuel leak that drained the tank, has a Clutch lever that we are struggling to replace due to changes in equipment mid range and a serious rust problem, not bad for a bike less than ten years old, It is currently SORNed until he is old enough to get his license in March, but at this rate it will have rotted in two before he gets to ride it! The Kawasaki bikes we have are the wife's and she loves them. I am dubious of the build quality and they also suffer from Rust. However, the engines just seem to go on forever. My SV has had a full external bolt kit to sort out the rusty cheese engine bolts, a real treat from Chewies and took ages to hunt them all down on the bike. The exhaust refuses to rust out so trying to convince the wife that I need a new can is a no hoper! There has been some small areas of rust on the sub frame and faring frame, but otherwise she has ran almost perfect since buying her in 2007. Our bikes are kept garaged, are sprayed after wet rides with WD40, regularly serviced and have expendables changed as soon as required.

The quality of the bolts are shocking. BMW are not that reliable, and triumph it seems to vary from bike to bike (they seem to like impersonating 2-strokes with the 1050's). The most reliable is honda, Yamaha, Suzuki in that order. Kawasaki took some of the worst elements of the Suzuki etho's (cheesium steels) during the tie up 10 years ago, but the motors seem to be as reliable as Yamaha's.
