Default Highway code: Use the full amount of road space available

Can anyone point me in the direction of the highway code rule where it says "Use the full amount of roadspace available" - specifically looking for the rule number/clause/whatever..

They spent 6 months ripping up york ring road last year, turning 1 lane into 2 lanes on the approach to a roundabout, and then again when coming away from the roundabout the 2 lanes merge into one..

ONLY NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IN THIS COUNTRY - so they all queue in the nearside lane thus causing the queue to extend back 200 metres and block the roundabout/junctions etc. The few of us that take an interest in roadcraft and driving standards know to use the outside lane up untl the 'merge in' arrows. Except the mongo's in the nearside lane see this as pushing in and close up all the gaps because they think that the highway code gives right of way to whoever has been queing longest..

I've had enough and am making up some decals to stick on the back of the van, a kin to the ones on busses where it says 'let the bus pull out; highway code rule 28' or whatever it is. Actually, might just stick some bus ones on..

/rant.

So which rule number is it people need to go and read up on?

Same thing happened on my route home from work. We British do love to queue don't we?

Hahaha we play this on a two lane road into Happifax from Hudds. It is however a bit frustrating when you are in the queue due to the fact it turns into one bottleneck. People charge down the outside like the clappers and barge in at the end of the road for them. Had loads od cars trying to knock me off filtering and purposely pulling out a little to block the way.

What I want to know is who changed the rule of 'give way to the right' on a roundabout to

'I WAS HERE FIRST!!!!!' on your left.

My dad had a near miss with a big Range Rover driving woman Monday, he looked left, then right, drove across the mini roundabout and jammed on the brakes, just as this truck charged into view. He got out of the car and I WAS HERE FIRST, was what came out of her mouth!!!!
Its the same roundabout that I nearly ploughed into the engine of a transit at 5am on the way to work, because he charged out from the left.

Don't recall ever seeing it in the highway code. Just on signs along the route 'Use both lanes', followed by 'Merge in Turn', even then people queue.

A tip that I find almost always works (for me anyway) is to take up the position where I want to move into the queue, stop completely, put the indicator on, and wait. The first car might not let you in, the second might not even let you in, but the third will probably leave a gap flash you. There usually aren't that many people bloody minded enough to block you out. Stopping your wheels rolling and sitting still with the indicator on whilst people go push past you is seen as 'asking' to be let into the queue, and makes those who block you out look like the a**holes, whereas if you keep rolling with the queue, you are seen as 'pushing' your way into the queue and you are the a**hole.

Just think how much love I spread around whilst out in one of our unliveried cars and use that lane, or a roundabout properly.

Reactions say everything about what kind of a driver you are. Invariably, I find most people are **** drivers!

Driving has stopped being a group activity where everyone works together to get to destinations quickly and safely. It's now purely and simply "driver versus the rest of 'em"

Defensive driving is ow the only way. That is, EVERYONE is out to kill you.

Nope, am I missing something? Don't see anything there about using both lanes and merging in turn.

Lane nobs! I feel your pain Paul.

As another random example, my local community has seen fit to rewrite roundabout lane rules for my nearest roundabout. It's a four exit roundabout, all exits evenly spaced, and single lane exits, but one of the entrances is double laned. To me, this obviously means left lane for left and straight on, right lane for right, but for some reason people use the right lane to go straight on. Everyone does!

Sounds a bit pedantic, but I've almost been killed twice. I get in the left lane, wait for cars on the roundabout to pass, ride to go straight on and have cars cutting me up every time! It's so bad, that I have to use the right lane to go straight on, otherwise I'll get murdered, but this freaks me out, cos as soon as someone does it right and goes in the left lane, I'll be cutting them up. Also, I spend so much time deciding which lanes I'm gonna bloody use (correct lane, or sheep lane?) that I've pulled out before without looking and almost put my face into the bonnet of a transit van.

I always use the left lane when I'm in the car though. I won't entertain these fools!

I know what you mean about the Ring road Paul. They do it at night with sod all on the road (the times I've used it)
Defensive driving in built up areas is a must nowdays, hence why I've started skirting right round it and only spending 5 minutes in the rush hour jams
