Default smt doggy?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...sPageName=WDVW

so if i get a spare speedo and set it to whatever i want when i sell it? or even put away the original speedo and use a spare to rack up mileage and swap it back before mot or selling it? i always thought why some ppl keep a bike for a number of years and only managed to rack up couple of thousand miles. maybe that's how they do it...

now my question, when you buy a second-hand bike do you ever question if the mileage are genuine? And if you do question it, what do you check to make sure it is genuine? I am considering to change the sv for smt different but will be looking second-hand instead of brand new ones… and the thought ppl can easily cheat mileage worries me.

Yeah, I always question the mileage... really all you can do is look at the wear and tear on the bike and see if it matches the mileage on the clocks... stone chips around the lower areas, wear on the pegs, etc. - big miles tends to hurt the finish. If it's got worn out rubbers on the pegs and lots of stone chips on the forks, aftermarket parts, etc. for low miles then it's either been cloked or the owner is a todger at looking after bikes. You don't want it in either case then!

Sadly it's not illegal to change the mileage up or down, just to sell the thing on claiming that the mileage is true when it ain't... lots of dealers put disclaimers up for the mileage on used bikes because of this.

Plus... the clocks aren't the only thing to watch. My old ER5 blew it's engine (I wasn't riding THAT hard...) and they replaced it under dealer warranty with one from the scrapper... old engine had about 11k and the new one had 22k miles on it... so the entire bike was an 11k except for the 22k engine. Once I'd updated the V5 no one would have ever known about the change unless I told them. Even ifd the clooks are right it doesn't mean the rest of the bike is...

This is where buying high mielage bikes with full history pay off. I can prove that my bike has done 38000 miles, yet still people insist on buying low milage bikes without history!! (Well, 3 people i know did)

MOT certs have the mileage on. That's the only sure way to check I think.

actually, i won't even trust mot. like i've said before, if i have a spare speedo and use that most of the time and only put original on to put a few mile on the clock every year, i could have a really low mileage bike. plus for the first three years you don't need to do an mot.. i think i need to learn how to tell from the wear and tear on how old the bike is.
