Default regular maintenance tips request

I'm a new rider and have sv650.

what is the kind of regular maintenace that i should be doing.

also, i friend said that i should install scottoiler and i've searched through the forums and it seems to get good reviews. still wondering what impact it has on the life of chain + sprocket. I'm sure it has a positive affect. just not sure whether it is worth the cost (and possibly hassle).

with it costing as much as a new chain & sprocket, I am sure there should be some good reason to have it.

i'm possibly missing something. whats your view on that.

how long should i expect the chain and sprocket to last - normal commuting and no rash driving or wheeling. how long with scottoiler.

my perspective

follow maintenence schedule in owners manual, no more, no less, I have 118,500 miles on my SV, never done anything except regular maintenance.

before I had a scottoiler, I got about 15k per set of chain & sprockets after, I get 30k

Just started doing regular maintenance on my bike.

I was looking at the chain last night. I have done 200 miles since the 600 mile service where they allegedly adjust the chain but I am not sure if they did or not.

Now I always get annoyed with chains because they tell you how many cm it should move up and down but it depends where abouts you lift it and how hard you push! Not sure if it needs doing or not! Is there an easy way to tell?!?
