Default parallel/series????

how do i wire horns in parallel?? i have one seperate earth feed for each horn(theres 2) and one live supply ,when my (1)live feed comes out the relay ive wired 2 outputs from that terminal to horns ,am i right in thinking ,if i 'piggy back 'from one horns live feed to the other horn that they are in parallel???( run a wire from horn to horn(live feed)) the relay is ok and each horn works fine independently ,but when i put the 2 horns together the fuse keeps on blowing..???i have got the printout re parallel/series but i cant picture it on the bike,,please advise

Hi Jim.

Wiring in parallel the simple explanation. Wire up one horn so that it works (like you said you were going to) and THEN link (for example) terminal 1 on horn "a" to terminal 1 on horn "b". Connect terminal 2 on horn "a" to terminal 2 on horn "b". They are more likely to be marked "+" and "-". Make sure "+" connects to "+" and so on.

Good luck sir!

Yep, I think you've got the right plan.

To keep it simple.
Series would be from: live feed - into horn A - then into horn B - then earth.

Parallel would be from: live feed into both horns - out from both to earth.

Series is like two knots side by side on one piece of string, parallel is like rungs along a ladder.

HTH.

already shown.

Code:

(+) ------ Horn1 ----- Horn2 -----

Parallel

Wire in parrallel... if you wire in series, the horns will not receive the correct voltages.

Hi again Jim.

Just read the whole post through again. You've got it spot on now mate. The fuse is blowing because it can't handle the current (either sustained or "INRUSH" (initially high but dropping)). What rating of fuse are you using?

The relay is there to switch a higher current than the horn switch can cope with- therefore the supply which runs through its contacts must be suited for the load i.e. the TWO horns (probably about 10A). Your existing horn circuit (switch, fuse and cabling) runs the relay. The relay has a nice beefy feed from the battery via a (perhaps 10 or 15A) fuse to the horns.

Some might be tempted to connect the supply that works the relay to the load contacts OF the relay (in other words where the horns connect). This WILL just kill the fuse.

Cheers,
Garry
