Winter Fuel Additive

Greetings,

I am new to the sport however not new to the concept of properly storing your new toy over the off-season. I live up in Canada and we are forced to store our beloved 2 wheel friends for up to 6 months of the year.

I have a quick question for my fellow SV riders, to which i have heard many mixed answers.

I own a 2005 SV650S bone stock (hopefully not for long). Should I add fuel additive to prevent it from solidifying over the winter months. I have contacted the dealer he suggested just to ensure the tank is topped up and run the bike every now and then. However it is kept at an off site storage facility and is not very accessible over the winter months. He warned me that using fuel stabilizer will actually "gum" up my fuel injectors... isnt that the opposite of what should happen? Should I be looking for a better tech rep or should I buy him a pint?

I've always found silkolenes fuel additive to be goos stuff although never tried it over 6 months though. 2 options really either keep it topped right up and use an additive or drain it right out and keep it all dry. Don't forget the other bits of the lay up procedure as in the owners manual.

I lay my bike up for the winter in the UK due to the salt we get on the roads. I have an SV650 K6, the hand book states filling the tank and using fuel stabilizer. Of course the dealer had never heard of this, it shows how much they read the technical documentation.

I used this last winter, the bike was off the road for 5 months. it started and ran no problem this "summer", it rained a lot.

I would top it up with fresh fuel and use a stabilliser additive... HONDA dealers sell their own Honda branded one so should be good !

i have no idea, but why not run the bike low on petrol, then drain the tank? is this a bad idea?

I think you could do that Hovis ...but you would need to take it off the bike and keep it nice and warm and aired to stop it going rusty inside !

It is important to run the stabilizer through the injectors as directed on the stabilizer instructions. I didn't put oil in the bores but did occasionally turn over the engine with the kill switch activated to circulate the engine oil which was changed with fresh oil prior to storing the bike.

I don't give up riding in the winter, that is when I bring out the winter bike!

Good point I forgot to mention that !! Carburettors don't like having stale fuel in them either !

After adding the stabilizer I would give a bike with carbs a run of 5-10 miles to make sure the fuel in the float bowls had the stabilizer mixed with it
