If I was to own a bike, V5 it, insure it and tax it. Then cancel the insurance and change it into someone elses name and run about on it. (I have 3rd party cover on other bikes on SV policy)
Cheers

no because the bike is not insured.
Your 3rd party insurance is only valid if the other motorcycle your riding is insured.

Probably, Yes, but the "new" owner of the bike must have valid insurance and give you permission to ride the bike, but it depends on what context of "run about on it" you mean - everyday commute, once in a while etc.

I specifically asked my insurer (bikesure) about this, and they said it doesn't need to be insured. Nothing on the certificate about that either. I think I might get pulled a lot, but I might put up with that for a while.

I think you would find that the 3rd party cover may have a clause in the policy along the lines---Not owned by-not leased by-not hired by
Very very dodgy ground there my friend. Would it not be just as easy to get a multibike policy or inform your insurance by adding the second bike onto your policy but define as owner rider only--after all you can only ride one bike at a time |

indeed, I had cover to ride other bikes and take them for MOT's and when fixing them, it doubled my policy price, I doubt you'd get that at your age for anything apporaching reasonable money.
and as Rich says, check the small print, it will say the other bike needs to be legally on the road, so taxed, Mot'd and insured. Cheers Mark.

![]() However, in your OP you state you will have the bike insured in someone else's name, so you would be covered to ride legally. I'm not sure how you plan to do this, but be careful not to overstep the mark and end up committing fraud by accident. Finally, would it not be easier and cheaper to get a multi-bike policy? EDIT: Dickyticker beat me to it |

If the law states that the bike must be insured, and the insurance doesn't state that the bike must be insured by another policy (mine doesn't), then you are insured on the bike, surely? and therefore legal? as long as it isn't left parked on the road.
Often wondered about this and never found a satisfactory answer.
