Default fuel sensor

Was reading the manual and it mention in the fuel level sensor test section about the light going out once sensor is put in gasoline. Could water in the bottom of the tank effect the sensor trigger? Is it purely set up to only signal with petrol or just any liquid?

No sure, though if I remember correctly it used a resistance check to determine if there is any fuel in the tank. So I imagine it would get the same response from water, though that would be alot of water in the tank and would more then foul up your fuelling.

What bike and year you speaking about?

Yeah, think you're right. I know on the pointy it can be tested in water, not sure if its the same switch type on the curvy.

99 curvy naked. I did have a problem with the tank water drain rusting itself free from the tank lip so im pretty sure there's water in there. Fixed that and it seems to be holding.

Thing is i always just filled at 100 as i never trusted the sensor, but it caught me out the other day. Straight to solid light and cut out with no warning at 112 and only took 14ltrs on side stand.

Say 6 months ago, the flashin light did come on and it coughed and spluttered immediately and was definitely choked of pure fuel. Real bad. Had to keep it revved to stop it cutting out..

Well the curvys use a fuel c0ck and its a 'electronic' sensor for the fuel levels, though with your problems with the drain hole I'd be concerned that its not working and just dumping it straight in to your tank. As the tanks are double skinned its not something that you can just fix easy, and if I where you I'd be on e-bay looking for a new tank.
Even a dented on would be better to just see if you still have the same problems, shame your in Ireland as I could have lent you my spare.

Ah no, see ive fixed the drain tube. Had broke off on the top/fuel cap end but is back on now and holding so no water can get in / or fuel out (which was another annoying aspect which meant i could fill the tank fully to the brim)

*although you never know, it could be fubar further down. I can just blow on the rubber drain hose and block the fuel cap end and if it leaks i'll know, right?

I think so, though I've not had the tank apart before so can't be 100% and I can't check my spare at home as I'm not home till Friday.
Hopefully someone else will be able to advise that part.

Had a quick goo under the tank and it appears my water drain hose is gone off the bottom of the tank. No biggy as the water doesn't appear to drain on any electrics. I did put a dribble down from the fuel cap end and it did drain out the bottom so it aint blocked. Although my epoxy job on the fuel cap drain hose appears to not be holding up. Probably due to the fuel. I think i remember seeing that Araldite is fuel resistant?? Or Seal-all if i can find it..

..and why dont they seal the top outer rim of the fuel cap like they do the fuel tank cap plug? Help stop water getting in to that area in the first place like..
