K&N Oil filters

Yesterday I came to change the oil and filter on the sv and the previous owner had put a nice shiny chrome k&n oil filter, which looked pretty neat. Anyway, when I came to undo the filter I could get a socket or spanner to fit on the "17mm" nut. A 17mm spanner/socket was too big and slipped round and 16mm spanner/socket wasn't big enough. With a hammer and a bit of persuasion the 16mm went on, only when I came to undo the filter the socket slipped on the nut. The only way I could get it off was with a mega pair of pliers which squashed the filter and the eventually started to undo it. Has anyone else had this problem? I seem to keep finding funny size nuts and bolts at the moment where one size is to big and then the next size down is too small!

A properly fitted oil filter will come off by getting hold of it and turning.


When they are in awkward places a strap or chain filter wrench helps. or if you are a total wimp there is such a thing as a filter tool that fits those oddball filters with a hex head.

Please note I said properly fitted. Some people assume they must be tightened so the seal collapses and it stretches the threads as the container gouges into the engine casing

I have used K&N filters twice now. I have never had an issue getting it off when it was time to change the filter...

Never had a problem, undo by hand tighten by hand.

i have never been able to unscrew an oil fliter without using a huge **** off pipe wrench. 9 out of 10 people over tighten them. The K&N version oil filter i have has a hole through the nut so you can shove a small rod through it for extra power when turning?

I haven't yet bought a bike where I've been able to take the filter off by hand. Nearly pushed the SV over trying to undo that last weekend!!

Sounds like whoever is fitting em is over-tightening it.

I've used K&N filter for that last three oil changes and think they are grand. Never had an issue with removal or socket size.

Don't mean to sound smart/snobby but what brand sockets are you using?

I was using a halfords socket set. There was no way it was going to come off by hand...or not my hand anyway! Maybe the worlds strongest man maybe. I've replaced it with a champion with a ridged end. Champion have always been good in the past.

sounds mad but are you sure it was a metric size socket?? maybe someone changed it for a much older one, so metric would be very slightly out.

i used a rubber jar opener thingy to get my oil filter off
