I made a mistake!

Back in February, I put a brew if "Summer Fruits" juice on in the same manner as cider. It cleared well, but one bottle exploded! Lucky for me, the eight bottles were in a plastic box, so no carpet stains to explain away!

I left the remaining seven until mid-March when I tried to open one. It went off like cheap, warm champagme! Pink sticky cider everywhere!

I carefully put the remenants outside where they have sat, quietly getting angry since.

I found them today and foolishly thought they would have calmed down.

WRONG!

The first one nearly took my hand off, the lid came off so fast, so I thought I'd get rid. There's no way of opening the bottles without making a mess, so, here you go.

I could actually feel the recoil as the lid came off...

Nah, they'd just drink it! Never has a bigger bunch of drunken middle aged women been seen in one place at once!

Pete
i done the same last year. i made the mistake of using cordial as a flavour at the bottling stage this along with some priming glucose made for a very nice spout display. the kids had great fun

tiz a pity coz it tasted glorious.

next test is those essence bottles you get for cakes to add flavour.

Im gonna make some ginger beer but got some questions: -

Its going in a pressure barrel so do I double all the measurements?

"Then for the next 6 days, add another 2 tsp ginger and 4 tsp sugar." is this everyday for the 6 days?

Do I still need to keep releasing the pressure if its in a pressure barrel?

Cheers!!

1 pint water
1 tsp Yeast
2 tsp ground dried ginger

After a week, strain and keep the yeast culture (you can half it and use it to stat the next batch - I am making a double batch this time round)

To make the beer.

Take 2 pints water and 1 kg sugar, make a syrup by boiling it, add another 14 pints of cold water and the juice of 4 lemons and then the juice from the yeast culture.

Take six 2 litre drinks bottles and divide the liquid into them (this comes to about 1/4" above the label in a Pepsi Max bottle), add a tsp of sugar to each and squeeze out all the air, and put the top on.

Every day check the pressure and release if needs be.

Its ok to drink from day one - will be sweet and weakly alcoholic, leave for 4 weeks to mature properly then chill before serving.

Thread resurrection time!

Earlier in the year, I visited a friend of my parents who has several orchards. Subtle hints were dropped and taken, and I gladly recieved a sack of Kingston Black cider apple windfalls yesterday.

Problem is, apples don't suddenly let their juice out without some help!

So, apples got smashed to a pulp in my 35 litre stainless steel beer boiler and a cider press cobbled together from bits around the shed. The crushed fruits are in a tea towel between the silver foil lined piece of wood and the blue tray.

I've managed to get just under four litres of pure juice from the sack which weighed about ten kilos. Quite pleased at the results, but glad I didn't have to do any more!

Just got to get it fermenting for a few weeks, and it should be ready in time for Christmas. I do make cider from Tesco's cheap apple juice and it's not bad, but I hope the original, olde English variety will be in a different league!

Cheers!
