Curvy rear caliper replacement
OMO Is there possibly another rear brake caliper off another bike that will work on a Curvy????
About to replace the rear caliper yet again. Buying a used one off ebay as it's doomed to freeze up in a few years anyway and it's half the price of a refurb unit. But wondering is there a better designed caliper off another bike that would work???

Re: Curvy rear caliper replacement
Nothing else is a straight fit, no. I haven't any doubt that there are any number of calipers that could be persuaded on, but any other caliper will be subject to the same corrosive circumstances that your present one is.
Despite popular opinion, I don't think that the original one is particularly prone to fault, or at least no more than any other commonly found, modern brake. It has been suggested that being underslung may possibly cause it to gunge up sooner than it otherwise might, but I'm not convinced. Sadly there's no easy substitute for regular maintenance and cleaning.

Re: Curvy rear caliper replacement
Calipers without cover seals over the pistons (like cars have) are a pain and must be serviced regularly to clean the pistons or thrown away occasionally. I don't know of any with seals.
Can't you pay a mechanic a small amount to pop the pistons out yearly if you can't for some reason? It would be cheaper in the long run as you have to bleed the brakes after changing the caliper anyway so you are only a little time and some RRG away from stopping it happening in the first place? Sorry, I know that isn't the answer you were looking for. |

Yep. I'd buy 2 and keep a good one in the spares box so that when it does need a service, you've got a good one to put on, whilst you service the other one.

Re: Curvy rear caliper replacement
thanks all
It would probably help if I didn't ride in torrential rains and ford streams on a regular basis as well as washing the bike before i put it up but that's just the weather we've had this year. (up until 2 weeks ago) Still going to go with the used caliper (with like new pads, bracket and arm included) for $55 (£ 41) A refurb Unit here goes for $81 (£ 62 ) and it's from the UK but it's exchange on the old one and does NOT include brake pads. So roughly double the cost of a used one. If I can get 3 years out of this one (got a used one last time) It's still cheaper and loads easier than redoing one on a yearly basis. Think I will order the kit and redo one of the old ones so i'll have an extra one on hand for the next time. Having a spare ready is certainly a good idea...... Just my luck the bike will be down for a bank holiday weekend with perfect weather in the forecast. The caliper is of course scheduled arrive on Tuesday, the day i go back to work.

Re: Curvy rear caliper replacement
I've had my bike for ever and the last time I had the rear caliper off was 2010. Something was proper jammed but Husky03 did an exchange for a fettled one, and it's been on there ever since. I think maybe I had to clean up the old one once before than - mine is a 1999 bike. If it's done well it'll be fine.

Re: Curvy rear caliper replacement
I have found the cure!
And now have the rear caliper on Coca~Cola. Put my used rear caliper from the breakers on ebay today. Also came with a bracket and arm so put the arm on too as it looked newer than mine. Will see how she does next weekend in the mountains!
