Camera for travelling recommendations
I'm off to Cuba soon and I'm thinking of buying a new camera to take with me.
My G15 is a bit knackered and my 60D is old and heavy. Canon have just launched the M50 mirrorless camera and while I was looking at the M5 and M6 this one is cheaper and might fit the bill if it comes out in time for my trip. But as my L series lenses won't be used on this new camera there's no reason for me to stay loyal to Canon so just wondered if any of you had recommendations for a smaller than DSLR/bigger than compact camera that I can chuck in my bag. I'd ideally want to get something like an 18-150mm lens to go with it and I do prefer to use a viewfinder. Video not important at all.

Re: Camera for travelling recommendations
Hi LPH, I have just picked up a Lumix G1 for using vintage lenses on. Its the original in the M4/3 series but I think they are up to 7 or 8 now. It has a fold out screen and a decent evf. Yokohama has an Olympus OM-D that he can share his experience with. Mirrorless are a fair bit smaller than a dslr as well as lighter.

Re: Camera for travelling recommendations
Love my Olympus OMD EM10. It's small and there's a kit 14-42 pancake lens to go with it. I'mnot sure whether there's one m4/3 lens that would cover the range of focal length you want though.
Otherwise, a Panasonic TZ or Sony travel zoom, which have EVFs might fit the bill. |

Re: Camera for travelling recommendations
If you don't need so much zoom you could invest in a G1 for the better-than-most-compacts sensor. Flippin' expensive mind.

I think there is a Sony or a Panasonic with a one inch sensor. Unsure of cost, thinking might be the TZ100. This is Admin's turf.

Re: Camera for travelling recommendations
My brother has a G1 and I'm using it quite frequently. It's a great camera. I'd get one tomorrow if I could afford it.

Re: Camera for travelling recommendations
I'm going to give the Canon M5 a go. I got a student discount so it came in at just under a grand with the 18-150mm lens on a APS-C sensor. Should be there when I get home tonight.
Carried my 60D, flash and 3 lenses home last week, so heavy, I definitely need something to travel with that won't break my back. https://www.wexphotovideo.com/canon-...-lens-1607274/ Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

Re: Camera for travelling recommendations
to offer a fresh perspective...
pentax K100D number of reasons for this... - they use AA batteries (available everywhere) - pentax haven't changed their lens mount since the 60s. therefore even old manual slr lenses work on it which can be picked up for pennies. - the body itself can be picked up for around £50. so coupled with some beefy old lenses... you're getting equipment you can beat up while travelling without worry, and if it gets nicked? barely out of pocket. - it's a good camera too. I have one as my spare/backup and I wouldn't be without it. alternatively... for travelling, why not pick up an old slr? pentax K1000, olympus OM10? cheap as chips and you get something lovely to look forward to rather than 14,000 digital images of nothing. you can get the film processed and scanned onto massive digital files if you feel you want to do some digital processing afterward too. this usually costs anywhere from 99p (asda, but I think they've stopped doing it) to a fiver from any number of camera shops or online. |
