Bolts
Has anyone got any links to obscure bolt companies?
Basically what I'm looking for is a M10 capscrew bolt with 30mm of 1.25 pitch thread. But the tricky part is that the head can't be wider than 13mm! So like this but with a narrow head: https://www.a2stainless.co.uk/M10-x-...-A2_AJCL4.aspx I got some new mirrors, but because my handguards mount underneath the mirrors the supplied bolts aren't quite long enough. And the mirror mounting stem is unusually narrow! Thanks for any help! |

Re: Bolts
Only peeps I know of are ... Invicta tools and fixings. Canterbury, Kent. I've used them many times for 'one off' sized bolts etc. They are a brilliant company to deal with. I've always just gone in and got my bits n Bob's, they even had some really obscure british bike nuts n bolts in weird sizes n threads. not 100% sure if they do mailing but defo worth a call. Phone number is 01227 458333 hope it helps.

Re: Bolts
If you know someone with a lathe you could buy the standard capscrews in stainless, so you don't have to worry about plating/corrosion, and get the heads turned down. I'm assuming that these bolts are under relatively low stress?

Re: Bolts
Makeshift home lathe = put the bolt in a drill and spin it against a metal file.

If you do this keep the file moving as though you were filing something stationary or the file will quickly load up with the metal you have removed. If you finish off with some emery cloth you will be surprised how good a result you can get. |

Re: Bolts
The across corners dimension of a 8mm hexagon ( 10mm bolt ) is about 9.25mm so if the head is reduced to 13mm diameter you will be left with just under 2mm of metal left between each corner of hexagon and OD of head. Should be OK as only holding mirror so no need to tighten it too much. Normal OD of a standard 10mm Allen bolt head is 16mm.
If you got some 10mm ID tube x 1.5mm wall you could make a couple of spacers and use a normal ( longer ) M10 bolt, maybe not so pretty though.

Re: Bolts
Thanks everyone! It's looking like it isn't made by anyone, so I'll probably just try to file a normal bolt as suggested.
The head of the bolt is totally hidden in the sunken recess of the mirror anyway, so it doesn't need to look perfect The narrow headed bolts were supplied with the mirrors so they must be strong enough. |

Re: Bolts
Can you not drill out the outer mounting hole so you can get a standard size head in? Being a Mirror i guess it's only plastic at the base anyway?

Re: Bolts
My penny worth! Look at the Classic Bike scene - There are loads of small enterprises that will make stuff in stainless steel - got a mate, (that has now unfortunately retired) that would have easily knocked out /modify anything stainless.
