Possibly fuel getting into the oil though apparently. I can't see why that would happen though?

I had a 2006 DRZ400 SM and you have to turn petrol tap off when you leave bike as quite common to end up with fuel in crankcase if you don't . No vacuum device on fuel tap.

If this was a Triumph Speed Triple it would be a classic case of the ignition pick up coil failing.

Since it's not a Triumph it may be a red herring. There's usually a spec for the coil resistance (check it cold and then stick it boiling water and recheck - if possible) and for gap, assuming (yet again) it's like a Triumph. Is the coil getting hot?

Sounds like a bad spark more than fuelling to me. Just a guess though. It just sounds similar to my sv when it was missing on one cylinder

I'm looking into stator issues. Seems to be a common theme on similar mileage bikes. I'm going to test it when I get another day off. Probably just pull it open and see what it looks like too. It's unrideable at the moment beyond 30 minutes. The first 30 smooth minutes are brilliant though. Especially with the slightlly warmer weather we're getting and dry roads.

This is possible too. It's a 2003 bike so before the vacuum petcocks (2007 onwards I think). I'm checking to see if it's leaking in the off position. I've got a small bottle taped to the petcock. If there's anything in the bottle tomorrow it means it's leaking even when off. I would have thought the float needle would stop the fuel flowing into the carb and then into the crank case though if that was the case? Unless the float needle or seat is dodgy. I'm going to get a carb rebuild kit too and make sure it's all good to rule that out.

I'm going to dump the oil too and check it for signs of fuel.

It's at the mileage though that a lot of stators seem to go, so might be best to swap it out anyway. Not cheap though, even for a decent aftermarket one.

Mine was exactly like this, and/or it leaked through the overflow pipe down to the ground.

Speaking of toasted stators. Look what I've found.

damn. Is that from your VFR? Did you swap out the reg/rec?

I've checked my bottle on the petcock this morning and the DRZ is fine with the petcock in the off position. I'm going to rebuild the carb with a new seals, jets and float needle when the kit arrives.

Changed the oil this morning and there was definitely a smell of fuel in the old oil.

Going to test the stator this afternoon and possibly open it up to inspect it.

Those outdated shunt regulators can do that, they draw full power from stator coils all the time and 'shunt' any unwanted power through heatsink, cooking the stator and the RR. Best cure is to get a 'series' regulator ( Electrex do them ) and reduce the power drawn from stator to just what the electrics need at that time - and the Electrex RR851 series one on my AL7 runs 30 degrees C cooler than the original Mosfet Shindengan shunt one ( 40 deg C instead of over 70 deg).

Yep the VFR. I swapped the reg/rec a few months back but I wasn't entirely happy with the output. The stator tested fine for resistance and earth leakage but I left things till the winter service before checking further. Last week I did a voltage test and two phases were 15vac and the other 20vac at idle. That convinced me to replace it.

It's a common problem with VFR so not entirely surprising.
