Default Cleaning downpipes with Harpic Power Plus 10x toilet cleaner

A mate swears by this stuff for cleaning downpipes.

I've seen stuff called Dr Downpipe on YouTube.

Any thoughts?

Yes I've used Harpic on my pipes. Works well but I've heard it can damage pipes long term so I used it sparingly.

Yes, the Harpic does work - brush on carefully to avoid splashing on engine cases etc, leave 10 mins, rinse off. However I found the first 18 inches of downpipe (i.e. the hottest parts) discolour again in a couple of months.

Any limescale remover will do, it's the acid in it used to dissolve the limescale which also takes off the tarnish. Like rust killer un-oxidises rust back to metal. There are some gels from Range which I've used in the past.

Spirit vinegar, acetic acid, citric acid (yes rubbing a lemon on it) are far more gentle if you are worried, they take longer though. It won't prevent it coming back and a quick polish is better to maintain it once you've cleared it.
