Get a new job and move out of London if it's so expensive to live and rubbish pay!

Great response. However, i didn't say it was rubbish, i was just pointing out the misconception that there is this huge pay divide between the North and South. Its better down south.

the big sprawling new town/city that keeps growing and actually swallows up those little towns that you could actually have said were inbetween.

God that makes me sound old and bitter. Still can't believe that they have split my town in to 4 parts/areas.

I'm not sure that most people in the commuter belts actually appreciate the wilderness that much.
MBK - 77miles!!! It probably takes that long to get to ours though! But we have the roads! hehehe

77miles is worryingly far to the nearest hospital though by a lot of standards.

You can't always rely on air support and you don't want the ambulance doing a 150mph round trip if you're getting a coronary or just lost a leg.

No chance of making it within the 'golden hour'.

(In St.Georges, Grenada, some genius thought a good idea for the capitals main hospital would be right at the top of a hill with very narrow roads)

Peg lived down South, and believe me, when you move up here, and are doing the same job for a third of what you were earning....I'd say there was a considerable gap between North/South wage packets.
We'd be far better off down South income wise, but unfortunately I own my house, and selling it would only get me a pocket sized hamster cage daaan sarf, for the money I'd get for it, 40% equity in these four walls or not!

I have been using my car (Honda Accord Type-R) for commuting over the colder months - even at 30mpg I am spending £70 every two weeks and its only a 22 mile round trip. I have pulled the SV from its hibernation to save me a little cash as it manages a heady 42mpg - woohooo... I can cycle but with a young baby the cycling cuts another hour out of my time with the little one each day - something I don't want to part with.

I still pay less now (at 33) than I did when I was 18 for commuting to work - I used to put £40 a week in my Cavalier back then to get to work and back and thought nothing of it! Shudder to think what it would cost me now... (quick mental maths say in the Honda £70 a week...eeeeek!!)

£72 to fill up but averaging 600 miles a tank which last a fortnight. Commuting takes 640 miles every 4 weeks and I get paid £63 for the privilege. Can't take the bike unles I know that I have an empty diary as it has been frowned upon if I turn up in leathers.

btw petrol may be expensive but depreciation is going to cost you more on a newer fuel efficiant car. And the running costs.. bloody sucks

See, thing is, the NHS get past it because they built a "community" hospital in Stranraer with an A+E....except don't have the staff to man it properly and a lot of the time, it's downgraded to a minor injuries unit.

The DGRI is actually 72.6 miles away according to google and Ayr hospital is 52 but it's a different PCT so DGRI is always the first port of call.

So yeah, although city living in general can be more expensive, at least you have access to a decent bloody hospital that you can get to in less than an hour by ambulance!
