The good old days?

2022 inflation 5.4%, interest rates 0.25%

1979 (the year Thatcher started her attack on the north) inflation 13.4%, interest rates 17%.

I had just bought my first house, a new 1 bedroom terrace in Stamford for £7750, as a Cpl in the RAF I was paid approx £7100/yr. We had it easy back then.

Not sure what to make of that, are you saying the house buying was good ?
But the inflation and interest rates can't have been good !

I bought a new house for a little over 1 years salary - and £7100 was about average UK money - I doubt that applies anywhere in the UK now. So, that was good. Incidentally, I sold the house for £13250 18 months later.

Mortgage rates were painful.

A good step on to the housing ladder then.
I bought my first house for about £21000 in 1985 but I can't remember what my salary was then .Mortgage rates would have been quite high then I think. The endowment mortgage had a shortfall of course towards the end of the term, not the surplus the building society manager implied when we took it
out ! But can't complain, house prices have gone up for those lucky enough to own one. Not so good for first time buyers of course.

Heated Gloves

Work off battery packs too, might not be fashionable (not made of lycra) on a pushbike but hey, warm hands are warm hands!

I've tried some. Very bulky, ill fitting and only heated the back of my hands unfortunately. Not to mention unbelievably expensive, more so once you factor in battery packs.

Fashion is the last of my concerns commuting in the cold wet darkness.
