Not worried about the pub being two miles away. The idea is cheap and cheerful. This means carry outs from the local supermarket and supping the beers at the camp site.

+1 prefer campsite drinking to pub drinking. I am trying to think of ways of creating a platform so that we can have a fire without damaging the grass. The campfire is the most important part of camping in my opinion!

If you want a camp fire your going to have to find a different camp site. They made that quite clear when I called them.

I understand that, but I was thinking of creating some form of raised bbq esque fire type thing that wouldnt harm the ground and would mean that we could have a semi decent fire. We did a similar thing with the bbq trays when we camped for rockingham - except it didnt work!

Time to go away and experiment.

I'll try again. The camp site specifically said the only type of fire they would deem acceptable would be proper BBQ's or the disposable ones. Anything that involves burning of natural habitat would not be accepted.

I am not trying to break the rules, but instead bend them to our advantage.

Definition of a Barbeque from dictionary.com:

Quote:
a cookout in which food is cooked over an open fire; especially a whole animal carcass roasted on a spit
Quote:
A social gathering, usually held outdoors, at which food is cooked over an open flame.
Quote:
A framework, as a grill or a spit, or a fireplace for cooking meat or vegetables over an open fire.
I dont see any reason why we cannot bring some form of metal tray (like a small version of the cheap round £20 charcoal bbq's) fill it with wood (which we can buy), charcoal etc, put a grill over the top of it (so that we can cook meat on the top early on in the evening) and set light to it.

Just because the flames are really high doesnt mean that it is not a barbeque. I cant see the campsite minding as long as the fire is in a proper bbq type container, their land is not damaged (the tray will protect it) and there are no safety issues.

Actually that does seem quite a viable option. It is a BBQ in the sense of the way the guy on the phone mentioned. So possibly we could bend the rules a touch. Dunno.

Exactly - it doesnt have to be this exact one. A rectangular one might work - could then fit the tent and sleeping bag in the BBQ and strap it to the back.

Alternatively - put two holes and a neck strap in that one and use it as a helmet!
