This is not the case since the owners could have been obliged to sell via a compulsory purchase order. dont believe that... thats the conspiracist in me....

OF course a big company would say that, I for one cannot see what geological reasons mooving the motoryway 25m would have had...

The interesting fact is true but the road constructors did offer a substantial amount of money for the house as they were effectivey surrounding the house with motorway. They refused to sell and they reached an agreement that they would stay as long as the road people built an underpass for them to reach the house.

American Sonya Thomas holds no less than 15 world speed-eating records including 80 chicken nuggets in 12 minutes and 65 hard-boiled eggs in six minutes and 40 seconds. She is only 5 feet 5 inches tall and weights a miniscule 7 and a half stone.

The land where the fields are next to the farm house (inbetween the motorway) has a distinct problem with sinking. Even if the house was demolished, the contractors had planned to split the carriages anyway. Just not to the extent that it has been done.

All true as well.

they've done this with the m1 between junction 36 and 37 - stepped the carriageways on different levels - the southbound carriageway is about 20 feet higher than the northbound which is immediately next to it...

IIRC, that wasn't done due to subsidence issues though. That was done as a cost saving exercise mainly. It avoids re-routing the carriageway without having to build the land up for the northbound carriageway.

If you build the land up, but the underlying land suffers subsidence, you have a major headache, especially if it's a motorway you're building.
