Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
I’m not sure Darren, possibly. It is a 100 year old property and there is a manhole at the edge of the hole that is now kind of hanging in mid air and the pipes to and from it are the old glazed terracotta pipes. Housing association have been out and a contractor is putting in a quote but because I built the extension the surveyor said they have nothing on file about it and I might need to get retrospective permission. We got permission for it when I did it, and got letters from the housing to give me the go ahead but I can’t find these as my ex’s filing system is sh!t

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
Its not an ex mining area is it? Could be an old mine shaft that has collapsed. Around here there have been several made their presence known. If the under lying strata is a soft rock then an underground water course could be the reason. Could prove to be expensive.

Blimey Rowdy - hope that's not too stressful for you!
Puts my issue with Thames Water into perspective, that's for sure.

That puts the water leak in my utility room in perspective. Hope it's fixed quickly.

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
Yeh, sh!t year all round Gary!
I’m down south, not sure any mining went on round here but there are a few sand pits and the soil is quite sandy. I am on a hill. Just hoping it doesn’t decide to get any bigger! Funny thing is had the housing surveyor round with a contractor to quote, but one of the home fix guys that works for the housing came round and said he was going to grab a bag of tarmac to fill it because he was expecting it to be about a foot square! It’s going to need about 6 tons minimum

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
They are coming out to repair it today. Theee is about a foot of water in it that they are going to pump out, hopefully find the source. I’m on a hill so can’t see it being the water course

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
Would be interested to know what their opinion is. A few years ago I rediscovered a forgotten mine shaft . That caused a few headaches at the time! It could of course been the site of a local sand/ gravel extraction which had not been capped off properly

Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
Phew. Just caught up with this thread after a while, hope it gets sorted OK.
It puts my case into perspective. I reported to the Council this morning that the drain gully in the street outside my house is collapsing, it seems the recent heavy rains were the last straw. There is a street opposite with a significant slope and several of the gullies in that are blocked, so much of the water ends up down in the one outside my house. If it collapses completely not only will there be a big hole for car wheels to drop into but also there will be flooding. They used to come round reasonably regularly to vacuum out the gullies, but that seems to have ceased in the last few years, austerity and all that. In fairness to the Council the chap on the phone was excellent, and actually knew the location so appreciated the case. Hopefully it will get sorted before it gets too bad. Best wishes to others with much bigger issues.
