Re: What have you tinkered with today?
My house hates me, I have been battering it since I bought it 30 odd years ago and realised the builder had no bubble in his non bubble bar. No cement powder in his mortar and no electric cable. (One socket on the upstairs landing, no sockets in any bedroom :- rewire required 1 day after moving in!)
For this reason even though I like the idea of going smart everything. I have avoided electronic locks. Sometimes old proven technology is best. I apologies for geeking out in my previous post. But was proud that I had link several technologies to give myself the power to control power use. But as my gas/electric is £170 a month I need to take action.

I'm actually disappointed. I was expecting a fusion reactor in your shed.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
Wow Tim, £170 a month is steep. I live in a 4 bed detached house with gas central heating and only pay £79 a month. We saved a lot on electricity by changing all the light bulbs to LED's.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
£170???
Wow What have you done with regards energy efficiency? If very little then 30% saving should be in your sights. What heating system do you have? Gas/electric? Combi/standard boiler? Lighting? Filament/CFL/led? You running a server farm? Seriously. How much gas & electric do you use a year? How old is your boiler? Building efficiency is bread and butter to some of us. |

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
We also invested in Solar but with the current rates, it isn't really worth it now. The electricity generated from the roof is used to power stuff in the house thus reducing the amount taken from the grid. In any case you get paid for it whether it goes to the grid or not.
We also put in a Tado (similar to Hive) system to control the central heating. You can set several temperature settings each day and if you go out, it stops the heating until you get back. All controlled from your smartphone. One other thing we did was to take advantage of the government scheme to put in cavity wall insulation. Being a detached house, there is a lot of externnal wall area. Wr did have to pay a small contribution but it was still £900 less than it would have been if we had had to pay it in full.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
Finally a nice day and no snow to spoil things. Car got washed, bike was awakened after its hibernation. Bike too got a good clean, some liberal spraying of ACF before fairings attached. Just need to tax it now.
