Very enjoyable walk this morning, out in the hills behind Llanfyllin with Mabel. Gorgeous autumn day.
Mount Doom and Mordor in the distance. Well...the Breidden Hills wreathed in cloud actually! ![]() The view from Domen Gastell. ![]() Two of Mabel, just because..... ![]() ![]() |

Out for a lovely walk with Mabel this morning. Warm sunshine and gorgeous views.
This has been mostly my immediate view for more than nine years. She's such a good walking/hiking/running companion. ![]() General views. ![]() ![]() Ooer! Seems appropriate for Hallowe'en... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Just keeping an eye out for squirrels! ![]() ![]() The results of a spot of foraging - 3.5lbs of big, fat, sweet chestnuts. I'm going to enjoy these. ![]() |

Wow those are nice fat ones. All the ones I've seen this year have been poor.

When i was a kid growing up in Kent, I used to gather loads of big, fat sweet chestnuts. In the forty odd years I've lived here in Sir Drefaldwyn, this particular spot is the only place I've ever found where they grow to an edible size. It was the same last year. The line of trees is in a sheltered spot which gets pretty much full sun all day, so maybe that's why they reach this size. There are literally pounds and pounds of them falling from the trees onto the grass verges and the lane.
Fortunately very few people seem to know about them, which leaves them all to me! |

Nice photos. I guess you're roasting those chestnuts.

There is a row sweet chestnut trees in the park by Trev Towers - I'll go have a look at their nuts (no sniggering at the back) and see what they're like. I have a couple of corkscrew hazels in the herbaceous borders but they produce tiny things.

I shall roast some, sow about a dozen in pots, and store the rest to cook with. They keep for months; I still have some left from last year. I just soak them in boiling water for a few minutes, then peel them and add them to soups and stews.
