I think the key point is that much as you think the UK is a bike mad country,it does not compare that fantastically with many others. Therefore they will not continue to offer a bike which,( let's face it) has never been embraced that warmly by the general biking folks of the UK, if sales figures do not warrant it.

The customers they would lose by not offering the SV1000 is loose change compared with their overall sales world wide.

He's right, you know? Take the portuguese example. We're always at the EC's tail, our wages are miserable compared to the UK, blahblahblah. But go for a ride and all the other bikers will be riding R1s, CBRs, GXRs and ZXs. Nope, not the 600. Thou's only, please. Nope, not 3 or 4 years old. Last years model, please, and that's only because next year's haven't arrived yet. I think I've seen the grand total of 3 SVs around here. Lost count of all the others...
