It costs £100 per minute to run each court of the Old Bailey, and they have 18 courts.
The phrase 'on the wagon' comes from when a prisoner found guilty would be taken from the Old Bailey to Marble Arch for his execution. The wagon drivers would stop on the at a tavern for a drink to taunt the prisoners as they were not allowed a last drink because of being 'on the wagon'. The chap who runs the Old Bailey gave me a private tour last night - fascinating. |
