That word also refers to any paper product that has a centre, or part to be rmoved. Like Copie labels, the bit that you end up throwing is exactly that, Selvedge

I just got the word from a weirdo I work with who collects old tax discs, never heard it before

. My life has now been enlightened by some wisdom from the ghettos of Bromly and I will try to use selvedge in as many sentences as I can (when I'm forced to talk to him)

The football World Cup has been stolen while on exhibition at Central Hall in Westminster, London. The £30,000 solid gold Jules Rimet trophy disappeared while a church service was taking place in another part of the building.
Thieves removed the cup from the "Sport with Stamps" display at the Stampex exhibition, but stamps worth £3m were left behind.
