Bloody hell, me and alcohol really don't mix. I had a single glass of quite nice red wine last night and I've woken up this morning with a headache.

I like red wine, but like you it doesn't like me. I tend to keep to clear drinks, but I don't drink much these days.
UK brewed beer doesn't do me any good, yet if I drink beer in Germany, France, Holland I'm fine.

I'm ok with the occasional pint of proper ale, but even then any more than a pint does me in. I've never really had any tolerance for alcohol.

That's because you've been sensible and not become used to it. It's one of the loves of my life. My favourite tastes are dark beers, good coffee, cheese and quality sausage. Followed closely by tomato, basel & garlic.

Could be the remains of yeast and other stuff in 'darker drinks' (like real ale and some UK beers) - that is affecting you - I think continental beers are probably well filtered to give them their lighter colour). Real ale really gives me a bad head and an upset stomach, but lager is fine, red wine also affects me pretty badly.

If you ever get the opportunity, try Adnams Broadside. It's a deep red colour and is 6.3% in bottles and slightly less at 4.7%. From Suffolk though so good luck!

I do like the odd pint of IPA but like a few of you it seems I cannot get through much before regretting it badly. Can drink far more in the way of spirits but the sugary mixers I like to have with them are something I'm trying to cut back on.

As it's a bank holiday weekend we'll have a nice bottle of Rhone red tonight I think as a treat. I tend to spend a bit more on wine these days as the better quality is less likely to give me a headache so the wine rack only gets raided when we think we deserve it.

Where are all the younger ones piping up about their heavy sessions and early morning runs to shake it off...

If I have a session on a Friday night I'm screwed for the rest of the weekend, I can't handle it these days, no matter what booze choice.

Now I just pick a nice beer and have a few...I'm partial to BrewDog Elvis Juice these days, lovely stuff

Think it's more to do with the additives that are used in our beers, which aren't found in continental beers.

Most German beer should be brewed to a natural standard, with no additives, but there was a big hoo hah as one brewery was found to be using additives to give the beer a longer shelf life. It's stuff like this that causes headaches, I'm sure
