I started English lessons at age 10 on a public school. And if it all goes according to my plan, and not thanks to the government, my daughter should be starting at age 3 with private tutoring at the nursery. If I sit on my **** waiting for this government to give me something I might as well give up now...

SO true, unless you are a pikey dole earning scumbag and just expect everything to be given........ In which case you get what you want.....

If i say found that I loved Italy (as an example), and everything i wanted was there and available, I would learn Italian. Same goes for Germany, Spain, where-ever....

But im also saying it wouldn't sway my decision, but it would make things more difficult.

See where im coming from. Everything else your saying I agree with. If i have the funds, I'd also like to train my "future" children with another language at a young age. NEver know, it may help me to learn other langauges at the same time too

Dude, the phrase "wind your head out" springs to mind.......I don't think you really "get it" myself......that's just my opinion as the saying goes.

And your reasons are??????????

Can't just put that and not put why? Whats the point in replying at all if your nots going to say why you think I don't get it.

How are people meant to learn? Am i expected to "get it" from that comment?

Of course it's hard to find somewhere else to live.

I think that our friend fwom Barthelona made a very good point a few pages back when he said that you have to leave old attitudes behind and openly embrace the culture of the new place. This isn't just language, although plainly in many places that's another factor to consider. It's far more, it's about adapting, changing your worldview. I think that we Brits aren't the best at that. There are lots of reasons. We've never really had to, for starters. We've never had to rebuild from scratch.

This sounds like the Queen's Christmas speech, but I think that the immigrants that so many complain about can teach us a valuable lesson. Look at the recent turbulent history of eastern Europe. Now free, they are looking for opportunities. I don't deny that it's painful to us here. But language and culture has not been a barrier to them in coming here. So why should we see these issues as such formidable hurdles?

Perhaps we should all be a bit more flexible and recognise that the rest of the world does things differently and that there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Very valid points made Ed. However I feel it only fair to point out that under my policies, such treatment to a domestic pet would see the perpetrator dealt with most severely.

Please carry on.

AS said, got no problems with those coming to make new lives and make an effort. Maybe its just in the SE, but i'd say the majority of those i see can hardly speak any english.

Its not their fault, if I was from an under priviladged country and another country offered me everythign for nothing, i'd be straight there too..

Culture change doesn't scare me. The overall change of a new job in another country, having to make new friends, learn the way everything work (i.e house bills, insurances, taxes etc etc.) is the more worrying aspect.

Change is hard, big change is harder. But if you want it enough, you will adjust.
