Likewise.

Changing words doesn't change minds, if it did there wouldnt be so many bad words for the same things.

Im of Romany heritage and I always pull people up for using the term 'pikey'. I find it really offensive
This was a comment I spotted in one of the links posted by 21QUEST and the use of the word is something I've always found particularly vile. I'm not from travelling stock, although I did spend many of my childhood years living in a caravan. I do however know a number of travelling families (through my involvement with traditional music) and am on good terms with them.
As with all racism, to put down an entire group of people on the basis of the visible activities of a few individuals, who may or may not be members of the larger group, is a lazy and despicable thing to do.

I'm a bit too cross about this to write anything more coherent.

It's not the entire group of people, it's the groups who turn up like the 10 caravans that turned up a mile from my house coincidentally at the same time of a massive spate of robberies. Or the ones who moved onto the works yard, massive spree of robbery, vandalism and attempted intimidation.

I quite like Chris Rock's take on things that there is a definite difference between a black person and a nigger. I'd quite like to link to it but I think the mods might not like the sweary content

I'd take it a bit further and say there's a difference between asian people and pakis.

And there's definitely a difference between people of travelling persuasion and pikeys... personally I'd mortar the f***ers with WP given half a chance of getting away with it...

I'd raise that point. I have Asian friends. Good colleagues, and a large proportion of my.life spent with them. Had some right laughs. Discussed religion, differences, alsorts. Younger and older. Been in their mosque to pay respects. I'm very fond of those I still keep in touch with no I no longer work there.

When I co ordinated the temps early on in my career at Willy wonkas, we had a disturbing incident. We all shared each others phone numbers, as if we were stuck for transport, we could get in touch, and also we spent time out of work with each other.
A lot of Polish lasses took the risk of walking through bad areas to get to work, they lived there, as the housing was cheap to rent. There was a lass, who was quite known for punctuality, and thought quite fondly of.

One morning one of the Asian lads had already signed in, got his gear on and was ready for getting down the factory, when he got a call from a very distressed Polish lass, hiding behind a bush.
At 5.30am a bunch of Asians had tried abducting her into s car. She'd run off and hidden.called Bash, and he told me what had gone on, so we could cover for him. Whilst he went to find her.. Words from his mouth.....paki bastids. Words from all the other Asian lads, exactly the same.
This was apparently well known behaviour, something the lads obviously felt strongly about. They aren't brothers, they are paki bastuds, words coming from their own people, obviously not wishing to be tarred with the same brush.

No group of people are the same. Having each others phone numbers was looking out for each other, regardless who you were.

Those who do despicable things like this, in a minority within a minority, only alienate others further, be it their own community or another. I wish it wouldnt happen, but for whatever reason, people are people, and it does.

funny you should say that Dizzy. one of my mates had the exact same phrase towards a group of Asians when i was at collage/uni. he was training to be 'imam khatib' (had to look this up) if that's the right words for it as well as doing his degree in computing but because his take on the teachings were different to the others he was given a hard time so much so that it caused a huge fight in the cafeteria as he called them 'brother'. my take on this is like Catholics and Protestants.

when he explained it to me what was going on i was shocked to discover just how racist these people are.

Was he he Sunni or Shi'a?

In my experience at work, this made no difference amongst colleagues. There was that many races and religions in that place, it had no place to a be racist. Muslims from Africa, Kurds, Iranians, Brits, Russians. You name it we had them. In the early days it was part of my job to make sure we all along.

Best line ever.... So where do you come from?

It was very rare to have a white British temp. Especially one who was very patient with language barriers and accents. Some very interesting conversations resulted from being asked that. Happened often, but then being the person looking after 160 different people, you got chance to learn an awful lot about people from other places.

Oh....and a Sikh fork lift driver. Working in a food factory he was told he coukdnt wear his bracelets. Should have heard the lads grouping together over that one....shop floor vs management.

I know I am possibly a bit late, but I do agree with Ralph's comments that racism is more prevalent in the over 60's. (As is, I other intolerances).

I definitely agree with YC's comment of the difference between Black people and N word. DB's comment about the asian colleague calling the would be abductee's 'Paki scum', is basically the same.

But consider all the comments about pond scum etc. This is a rejudice, but with a reason. I am far more likely to be attached by one of these people then a suited and booted in the City. A lot of 'racist' comments nowadays are directed at the pond scum.

Have a watch of the above. Its an experiment with a class of children in a school in 1970s America. It doesn't matter how you discriminate, it affects that person no matter what prejustice you use, however you choose to justify those actions.

Wow. I've never seen the effects of discrimination so clearly. The card game test was stark to say the least.

I do have a question to pose though. How does 'positive discrimination' effect people. A couple of examples, not really based on anything in particular:

"black men are good athletes"

"Both the candidates are very good, but I think we should give it to X because they went to a inner city state school, not a private school like Y"
