Does anyone else wonder if his lid coming off was due to his hair (ie the amount he had), moving around when he got hit?

I suspect his lid coming off was more likely due to his head (and lid) being hit by 200kg of motorcycle and rider doing about a hundred miles an hour. 200MJ of kinetic energy has to go somewhere, and the strap failing is somewhat preferable to public decapitation.

I thought I'd seen one of the marshalls carrying it off by the still-closed chin strap, tho I may well be wrong (and I don't intend to watch it again to check!)

He apparently wore a helmet a size too large for his head so the above theory COULD possible have had an input in the helmet being taken off...

The helmet would have been made perfectly for rules & regulations for the season, and I'm sure they would have took his hair into account. As someone has said above, the force of Rossi's bike and Edward's has to go somewhere unfortuantly it ended up the back of Simoncelli's helmet. |

Yes it does, the Italians know how to do the dramatic gesture well and in the case they've done it really well. Bravo.

'Series organisers Dorna have accepted the request made by Simoncelli's father, Paolo, for a minute of noise instead of silence. Every bike engine will be revved together in respect, with fireworks possibly launched at the conclusion.'
