Re: The All new Reeder Megathread
If I ever get a new boiler (not likely) it's going in the attic. You can get new timers very cheaply. I just got one for £25 because the old one wouldn't let me have the heating on in the morning without the hot water coming on too. That was a problem because the noisy cylinder lives in a cupboard in my bedroom.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread
the timer is one of those danfoss wireless ones thats also the thermostat.
i'm going to have to program it again as i forgot that i now have instant hot water (instant is a bit of a tongue in cheek) in hindsight i should have got them to put it in the attic but i knew that they would use the old existing pipework which i wanted rid of. the combi is in the "dining room". i guess if i boxed it in it would be quieter. |

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread
Modern condensing boilers are noisier because they have a fan inside because instead of the flame going from bottom of heat exchanger to the top it is blown from top to the bottom where the coolest ( return flow) part of heat exchanger lives so that moisture in combustion gases can condense and recover heat, and under that is the condensation sump. Also what the don't tell you is that unless return flow is <55 deg C ( but the lower the better, which is why condensing boilers are better for underfloor heating) they do not condense and efficiency is little better than old boiler it replaced. They now recommend oversize radiators and run them cooler. Problem is that domestic hot water needs to be about 62deg C to prevent legionella living in the hot water tank, so boiler needs lower temp for radiators than for water..

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread
But also a lot of condensing boilers don't have a hot water tank.

Re: The All new Reeder Megathread
Combi boilers don't have a hot water tank as they heat water directly, but flow is limited so more suitable for flats and small properties - most systems in houses in UK still have an indirect hot water tank, but in newer properties < 20 years old will be pressurised to 3 bar, which means you can have a great mixer shower and more than one tap or shower running at a time...
Condensing only refers to design of heat exchanger. On of the latest thing is storage combination boilers... Problem with a combi is if boiler packs in ( they are quite complicated and temperamental ) you are straight away in the position of having no hot water and no tank with an auxiliary immersion heater to make any... House builders fit combi boilers to properties because they are cheaper than a proper stored water system, and they can save the room required for an unvented tank, with a stored system any small heat loss from the well insulated tank goes to heat house anyway, but you can turn on any amount of taps or showers at the same time.. not just one..

Mrs LOM and I are ill. For once she is worse than me. I feel heartily sorry for her.

Well I got up and managed 20 minutes of the match and Mrs LOM is angry being ill, so we're on the mend. Think it may be a few days before we're well.
