WD40 will do for cleaning it, it's mostly kerosene anyway.

Paraffin, paraffin, cheaper than WD40 and a useful cleaning agent for all mucky bits of your bike.

Make sure the teeth on the front sprocket don't look like hooks while you're at it.

Before you use any spray or whatever on it, get an old table knife or lolly stick etc and scrape off the really thick lumps. Wear protective gloves and have loads of cleaning rag around. Once the thick stuff is off use an old paint brush and paraffin to degrease what's left. Finally a good spray with chain and brake cleaner will have it looking like new.

I had the same problem , my IRIS chain was making a right knocking noise , I cleaned with parafin & checked for sezied links which was fine , however still making a right noise . Unfortunatley had to use the bike making this noise on NW3 weekend (500 miles) which was not great !

Took bike back to garage who fitted chain & got them to check it out & they said the chain was worn out , I said that I was not happy with 8k out of C&S ( Scotoilered) they supplied & fitted a Tsubaki gold x ring for 20 quid ( extra cost on original iris kit) , which I thought was great service .

Bike is silky smooth & no noise now

Good luck getting it sorted

Cheers Steve

White spirit should be fine IMO, the turpentine substitute stuff seems pretty similar to parrafin to me.

Meths however I wouldn't use, it's a much more volatile solvent which could possibly damage the O rings

Just one more question I promise...

Does the chain have to be warm after a ride when you do the cleaning/lubing or is it ok when it's cold?

Better to do it warm, but won't hurt it doing it cold
