Suggested Route for Sunday, a bit shorter to give more time for stops and stares...

Commentary

  • I take you out on a similar route to Saturday's finish and some miles under the belt early.
  • Once on the B4391 enjoy the ride over the Berwyns to Bala, before a back road up past LLyn Tryweryn (interesting to Google the history of that)
  • As you ride over the top on the B4391 towards Bleanau, enjoy the view that opens up with the Glyders in front and Rheinogs to the left. See if you can spot the Tanygrisiau dam hidden in the hills.
  • Keep an eye out for the Ffestiniog steam trains from Bleanau through to Tan-y-Bwlch. If you want to stop to look at steam trains, Tan-y-Bwlch station is at GR SH 64968 41536 and has a good cafe and loos. More steam train action is going on in Porthmadog though if you like trains.
  • Continue on the B4410 (quite twisty) and you will come to the Glaslyn Osprey centre, worth a look if you like bird watching. There is also another steam railway here. (SH 59268 41302)
  • From Prenteg is a nadgery little road which could be cut out if desired, but well worth it for the views of the coast and back into Snowdonia. Take a detour to GR SH 54978 43366 for an interesting old ruin if that floats your boat. Google Cwm Ystradlyn...
  • Down to Porthmadog for lunch/fuel/etc. Here the Ffestiniong and West Highland steam railways meet, plenty to see if you like old trains.
  • The afternoon is mainly about the riding, with faster more challenging roads.
  • Follow the route to Beddgelert. Great ice cream here if it is not too early after lunch! Nice riverside stroll too as an alternative stop for lunch.
  • From Beddgelert you head towards Snowdon and climb out of Nant Gwynant with Snowdon on your left. Beware of idiot car drivers looking at the view and also for walkers all over the road! There is a great car park at GR SH 65802 54149 for photos with Snowdon in the background and a view down Nant Gwynant to the sea.
  • The route takes you to Betws-y-Coed and with it being Sunday there is a big bike meeting place there worthy of a slight detour. GR SH 79483 56574.
  • From LLanrwst you climb on the A548 aka 'The Crashy Road' as a number of organs have come to grief here. Enjoy the twisties but don't get bitten.
  • Great riding roads follow all the way to the Horseshoe Pass, the scenery is good but nowhere of note (you pass by within 3 miles of my house - PM me if you fancy calling in for a cuppa).
  • The Ponderosa cafe on the Horseshoe will be packed with bikes if you want to stop, before a short hop back to Chirk

A few pics from this lovely weekend.

Just after I took this ^ a group of bikes pulled up and I had the pleasure of meeting Garynortheast, shame we didn't make the cafe later.

All in all two wonderful routes.

I may pop up a compilation video in a few days if it turns out well.

It was good to meet you up there on the Bwlch. We couldn't really hang about for too long as we were on a stolen few hours! Looks like you had a great day.

Take the one in six road from Prenteg to Cwm Ystradlyn (above Porthmadog) Gary. If you take a detour up towards LLyn Ystradlyn you pass this iconic ruin...

Me there last year

Now, I've never been up there. I know where I'm heading on the next ride out! Thanks Mike.
