I've had time to pull the bike out and find a home for the reg/rec.
The best position for the unit is on the left hand side where I've abandoned the horn.
So it's about 1500mm run with a new sub harness from the current mount to the new mount

Ordered up the cable today, going in at a slightly larger gauge to be on the safe side. Went for 4mm sq. 39A thinwall, as I'm not too happy about using 3mm sq. (33A) over the route

Soldered joints or connectors? Be careful to make sure they make decent contact if the latter, otherwise the cable will make no difference as you'll get loads more losses in the joints.

I'm using the connectors to suit the R/R and the wiring harness as I've found a UK supplier for Motorcycle loom connectors. Their closed atm due to a fault with the stock system and website, I will be posting a link up once its up and running

Wire it straight to battery and miss out the loom altogether (dc side anyway)
