I had a tyre sent off to Metzler for repairs not that long ago (got it re-fitted to the wheel yesterday). The way they did that was to glue a patch on the inside of the tyre.

So long as it holds, anything that's air tight & secured in place should in theory work (supposing it can hold the pressure too). You'd just need the equipment to remove the rubber from the rim.

That was my logic too, I have the tyre removal equipment, so a DIY is fully feasible, but evidently my chosen 'plug' was deemed to dangerous to broadcast!
