A sharp tap to the plate holding the choke plungers in can often crack the corrosion off and free the screw off very easily.

Cheers for all your help guys, I'll give it a shot when I've got time - probably at the weekend and let you know how I get on.
I'll have pop at the radiator soon too.

Nah the screw's seized good and proper and the heads knackered so it's going to be a nightmare to get out

You need to hit it right. It usually moves even the really unpleasant ones.

I put the screwdriver into it and gave it a really sharp whack. Will practise my whacking and resume tomorrow

No, not like that. Sideways. There's enough flex that the extra leverage cracks screw without really touching anything else.

exactly the same thign happened to mine then it started runnin off a cylinder too!
u should change the spark plugs and see if your carbs need balanced, thats a big cause for hunting if one is running too lean and the other cud be rich, ideally a pro or a dealer shud b used for balancin them cuz it will make a big difference! (sv's use slides and diaphragms so ther is a chance of tehm running off, especially if uv just had it restricted/derestricted in last few thou miles)

You don't need a dealer to balance carbs... or indeed do anything on the SV.

Worse case, take the carbs right off and get yourself a 'impact' driver. Its a great tool, used it to free the stuck screw on Pings carbs. You need to take the whole choke cable off from the switch to get it off the bike though. They sell them at halfords for about 20 quid.
PM me if you have question and I might be inclind to give you my mobile for any futher advice.

Cheers guys, I have just restricted the bike although it was already running funny (exactly the same before). I'm almost 99.9% it's the choke plungers as I followed the cable to the carbs and tugged on them at the carb end and they cracked out with lots of white dusty rot stuff. Also when you use the choke lever on the handle bars it makes no difference to how it's running whichever position it's in. I think I'll have to find the right way of cracking off the screws (I have got an impact driver somewhere ) I'll have a go with that and also tapping it sideways.
I'm reluctant to do it though as I'm enjoying riding the thing so much!
