how do you remove a flywheel if it not possable to lock up the rear wheel to undo the flyweel bolt.

I found one site that mentioned this:

You can also lock the engine by putting a length of cotton rope down the spark plug hole, with the valves closed and the piston coming up on the compresson stroke. Any small bits of cotton left in the engine will burn up and not hurt any thing. (at least, I have never had any trouble)
Is this a valid way, is it safe?

Dan cannot get his off as the engine is not mounted in the frame.

I've sorted mine now, just need the right puller
