If you let it out too hard and with too much of a rev mismatch, you could quite easily crash. That's considered bad for the bike Also if you roll off the throttle while midcorner. I use a lot of engine braking myself though.

Get used to using the brakes, and with experience and plenty of miles under your belt you'll soon get used to using engine braking without thinking about it

Best to dab the front brake and show your brake light whilst engine-braking when there's people right behind you.
