Personally however, I have no clue as to what anyone finds attractive about a long straight flat road through such a hot, miserable, dried up, barren part of the country.
Nice tourist shops?

Why not buy an elcheapo but decent bike in the starting state, then sell it in it the finishing state before you leave the country??

That's what I'd do to avoid hiring anything at crazy money. Do the whole lot on your own bike, and make a road trip adventure of it. Make sure you do Death Valley, but make sure your tank is full before you start that road. You don't wanna run out there with no petrol stations It's a long push in oven temperatures...

Or ask the rental firm for a mini van (so you can put your bike into the van if need be)...
