Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
Mr Herring, if I'm missing something please say what it is. I'd prefer not to be ignorant if you can help with that

Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
Speed detection and ANPR are completely different ballgames.

Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
Mr RH
Do you want to explain the set up of the typical revenue generating (sorry road safety partnership) van

Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
It varies from force to force but the general standard in a dedicated speed detection partnership van is that they will use a laser system to detect speed combined with a camera overview so that when the operator pulls the trigger it produces an image with the speed, distance, time and date imposed upon it. These images are processed by a clerk back at the office in the same way as the images that come in from fixed site cameras and appropriate paperwork is generated. The vans are generally also fitted with video systems that record the passing traffic and are time/date stamped in syncro with the laser system, so if there isn't a readable number plate displayed on the image (for example a motorbike) they can cross refer to the video and hopefully get it from there (cameras record both ways). In practice if the operator captures a motorcycle they will generally review the video straight away and record the registration number on the log.
ANPR systems are not generally used around speed detection and they are usually operated from completely different vehicles. |

Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
both times i have seen a scammera van on the Glencoe road i have been doing naughty speeds and both times i have overtaken traffic while passing them. result no letter in post
i think the ANPR and or laser/video are set up for one side of the road only. might also be that they could not get my plate as i was overtaking a line of traffic as i passed the van. either way i'm a very lucky boy but eventually my luck is going to run out. i have also done this on my local duel carriageway and still no NIP but i have always seen them and slowed down. RH, what is the distance that they can get a 'lock' on you from the distance of the van? |

Hyperthetical speeding question
If you can see them, it's too late.

Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
The laser can lock on at unbelievable distances, but it does need to be held steady on the target for a period of time to get a reading, so the further away the target is, and the smaller it is, the harder it is.... Cars are easy as they provide plenty to lock onto, bikes are actually quite hard, best results used to be got from going for the headlights but with all the twin plastic sets up popular these days you seem to get better results aiming for the forks. You've obviously got a better chance against a copper standing on the side of the road (or even resting the device on the top of the car as they do) than against a tripod mounted set up in a van that is already zeroed in on a particular point in the road, but a good weave as soon as you see them might be more effective than hitting the brakes.....

Re: Hyperthetical speeding question
a ha, that might just be my saving grace. i weave on straight roads so not to flatten the centre of my tyres and so traffic in front catch my lights in their rear view mirror to make them aware i'm there.
