Give everybody ?20 and tell them to go down the pub and get p*ssed and put your energy into doing something useful.

I do have to say the word "team" and "building" are not in my favourites list.

"pub" is though, as is "afternoon session"

Come see me Lily I am 10 mins away !!! If you have time that is.

I went on 2 w/e away team building, there is an awesome place in Wales I can give you info on but it's not cheap. We did things on water, i.e building rafts, getting across with 2 planks of wood blah blah blah, orienteering, rock climbing, absailing, pot holing.

One was good, teams of 9, one person stood on an oil barrel with arms folded and stood with their back to their teams members. Team members in 2 rows of 4 waiting to catch person on barrel. Person on barrel has to fall backwards, rigid, with arms on crossed and trust others to catch them.

Maze made out of rope and you have to get each member thru maze without touching rope, can only use each hole once and it gets hard when there are not many holes and people left.

There was loads we did but to be honest paint balling is more fun LOL or getting wasted he he he .... I have grown up honest

I'm taking my team to the dogs.

Local greyhound track.

Admission, race card, 2 drinks, a pound bet and a snack bar meal. All for a tenner a head.

Next one is going to be ten pin bowling and the one after that is karting.

Team building is supposed to be fun and social. It helps the team get to know each other more on a personnel level and helps with interaction at work. A mini chill-out session.

I disagree. But then I interviewed and selected all of my own team. We all get on really well and the social activities have helped. They all work hard, do a good job and we have good fun when we go out. I also use other incentives. If I know my boss is not coming in the next day, I'll let one them come in late. If they need to slope off for a particular reason, I'll let them do it.

All this makes for a good working team.

That bit i agree with completely - any attempt at team building in our dept doesn't work and nothing gets solved

In fact as most people will know i'm pretty bored out of my skin at the min nothing going on - will my boss let me go on the three peaks challenge and drive the support vehicle - will he hell

Depends... Teambuilding exercises where you get to hurt the team members you hate, ie paintballing, are great I scarred my old boss

I think it really does depend on the team and also the personalities within your team. Theres two or three people that I despise and I wouldnt p*ss on if they were on fire. I just dont see it as a constructive use of my social time hence why I dont like these kind of things. I'd rather go to the pub with my friends rather than work colleagues who if I didnt work with I woudlnt have anything to do with as I dont like them as people.

Of course it may also be due to the fact that I'm a grumpy b*stard

When I ran the helpdesk I did similar to you though, I took them out for a night on the p*ss that I paid for, if they needed time off for stuff that was last minute that was OK and long lunch breaks on friday were mandatory. Overslept in the morning again no proble, a little give and take goes along way I think. But also like you I had hand picked that team so I had an interest in keeping them together and it does work, but I think you need the right group of people in the first place otherwise it just doesnt work. Also it needs to be a regular thing, 1 team building session does not a team make.
