Go and work in the chemical industry in general, it's not too bad, pays me a decent wage and they're paying for my house too (although I'm a chemical engineer, not a scientist).

Well I'd like to do something im interested in, thats related to somehting im passionate about. As much as I like my PhD project, I don't get up every day and feel excited...so I need to find something that isn't leaving me feeling low and uninterested 4 days out of a 5 day working week.

I used to visit Esso Research in Abingdon for Cam&Tappet Working Group meetings (exciting eh?). I think they're still there.....
and there's Castrol in Swindon.
