Pinlock inserts are easier to carry than visors (they lay flat) so you can have 1 visor, and a clear, dark and yellow insert to cover you for all sorts of light conditions.

Obviously they also stop fogging, and as I don't run a "Fog City" on my black visor, it's useless on a bright sunny but frosty morning.

The washing up liquid trick works well though.

That's a good point! Nice one. I'd probably have would up damaging the inserts if I'd carried them around like that, mind, but it's an edge I'd not considered.

The other thing going for pinlock inserts is that for arais that have a fairly convex visor, fitting a fog city is quite hard, and you end up with quite a large gap between the visor and the insert. This results in bad "ghosting".

For anyone that has ridden at night with inserts, you'll know about ghosting, and how annoying it is, especially in the rain. Ghosting is when bright lights reflect off the front edge of the insert, and then off the back edge of the visor and into your eye. This has the effect of making a second image of the bright light, slightly displaced from the real image. It's a similar effect to when you see a faint second (faint) reflection in some mirrors, or when your TV is badly tuned!

The ghosting gets worse the bigger the gap is. From what I have seen the pinlock insert is smaller, so should fit with a smaller gap, and is more accurately aligned.

I had a fog city, and got rid of it because I was tired of the ghosting, and I wear glasses. A visor insert is pretty useless when your glasses are steamed up! Instead I bought a respro foggy mask. It makes a seal round your nose and stops any breath getting into the visor/glasses area. I think it works great, and I can swap visors if I want. It's also removable when the summer comes.

Hi jim as thor so excellently suggested, racevisors.co.uk is the best place to buy any helmet accessories. I got pinlock for my shoei and they do them for arai at very chap prices too. give them a call or order online!!! BTW i used to have fogcity and they were very good but i had the problem of mine coming out when it started raining and they just wouldnt seral properly. happened on both my nitro and shoei helmets. go for clear pinlock. andrew

I've never had any ghosting at all with the Fog City in my Arai (a Condor)... In fact, I prefer it to a clear visor (it's the yellowish one that goes green as it darkens)- yellow tints are commonly held to be better for nighttime acuity of vision, seems to help me)

I've been using a pinlock in my Shoei for two years. I have never had any problems with it and ride in all weather all year round. I have just bought a dark visor which is pinlock ready so no need to drill the holes myself and know they will be in the right place.

I'm not sure if this is the right visor for you but will give you an idea of whats available

I have never used a fog city so cannot comment on it but I see no reason to use anything but the pinlock.
