Re: Police policing the police demonstration
I did hear a "caller" on radio two earlier, an ex miner volunteering to go and "police" the demonstration for the Police.
Made me laugh that did!

Aye, 20000 there but im sure a lot more would have gone had they not had to go to work today. Plenty to represent anyway, and at least show the government the strength of feeling.

Re: Police policing the police demonstration
Hell yeah I was there it was quite a peaceful protest, I have been to a few protest (when I was a student) before so yeah this was good. Was quite funny to be err policed lol. There were a few nutters lining route as well, was funny seeing them, no they weren't me!
Not sure if we will get the money we owed or more important, what system will be used to work out our pay rise each year. This has cost me about ?300 which I'm not very happy about, as I said it would have been mpnry for racing grr I hope the government takes notice, but what does take the **** is that PSCO (CSO, is there proper title) got the 2.5%, says everything I think. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7203839.stm Thats the BBC link to the story, it took me ages to get home suspect package at Belsize Park tube, so I had to get 2 buses home what fun Last edited by metalmonkey; 23-01-08 at 05:54 PM. |

Not everyone gets a payrise every year, and to expect one seems a bit much. It's very easy to see yourself suddenly out of pocket at the moment but that's independant of this; sit back and you'll notice we all are suffering. Being in the public sector provides you with many benefits that private workers don't get, please don't forget them when you're protesting. Out of interest the police banned the Kill Spills protest in London when the numbers reached 1800...... |

Re: Police policing the police demonstration
I think MPs shouldn't be allowed a pay rise.
Then they can go on strike..............permanently! |

There are benfits to working in the private sector as well I know plenty of people that work in that and do well, a few earning the same or more than I do, but it depends on what job you do I guess. I moved from the private sector to the public. All I can say about if you don't like your job then change it, I did. No it wasn't easy, but nothing worth while ever is. It should also be noted that we can't strike, I'm not an employee. Where as police staff can strike if they wish. End of the day the job is different to many jobs out there, which I choose to do. Its my choice, but I will suppourt the right to keep the rights we have in place, otherwise they will eroded beyond what has happened now. I'm sure most people in the job can think of a situation where they put themselves at risk to help someone. Yes I know the current money climate looks grim, but what did you expect with Labour in contol they screwed us all. |

Re: Police policing the police demonstration
Well i've just watched Gordon Brown on the news and it seems that he's not caving in, which is good, as every other public sector worker would soon be at it.
Better in the long term to crush the unions. OK i'm being very flippant, but in France we have entirely the opposite issue, where the unions run riot. What does a policeman earn these days? Of course i'm sure you can probably add a chunk of overtime to the figure. I think they deserve a reasonable level of pay, but certainly nothing near a proffessional level. To quote NWA........... |

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has said he wants to take a PAY CUT in April. The Labour minister for international development said MPs should act as an example to the rest of the country. Mr Malik said he was prepared to receive an increase in his pay of 1.9 per cent – a real term cut because inflation is currently running at 2.1 per cent. The Senior Salaries Review Board has recommended MPs salaries rise by 2.8 per cent. Mr Malik said: "Most politicians don't enter politics for the money but a sense of civic duty. I earned more in 1999 than I do today so I'm certainly not here for the money but because I believe I can make a difference. "MPs themselves will vote to approve their own pay increases, something that needs to change: I don't think it's healthy for MPs to retain the right to vote on the issue of their own pay. Ideally, I'd like to see an independent body established." |

Re: Police policing the police demonstration
I support the Police in their dispute.
It's not about the money in my view, it's about the principal. The recomendations of the independent pay revue, set up by this Govt to take the politics out of the equation, should be honoured. The Govt shouldn't be able to pick and choose whether or not to abide by the decision just because they don't like it. As for the earlier comment about coppers not being professionals and therefore not being paid as such - what a load of old shoemakers. |
